#SHORTS Modding Atari 130XE for Ajcek/Lamers

…or simply a short pictorial

Intro

As you might know, I am a member of a demoscene group Lamers. This group came to life in the `90s but it had a great comeback since the SillyVenture Atari Party held in Poland, re-started in 2010.

The Lamers created lots of demoscene productions for various computers. You can watch our demos at HERE and HERE.

Below few examples 🙂

There was even a HI-HI production made for the Garaż Party which I organized in my garage back in 2014 lol

Judging by EXIF data from pics, I started working on the following job in mid-2020. Yeah … blog posts lag…

Back then, Ajcek/Lamers asked me to mod his Atari 130XE which already was heavily modded. He wanted it black with some red additions. He also wanted me to install SIO2SD inside the already-packed case, so here we are with another #shorts story.

State of the machine

I usually have all the pics but not this time. I’ve figured out I should take some pics in the middle of the job…

Anyway, this is how the machine looked when Ajcek brought it to me and after I disassembled it.

As you can see in the above pics, there are quite a few mods already installed.

SIO2SD

As I mentioned earlier, Ajcek wanted me to add SIO2SD to it, but first, I needed to mod SIO2SD itself which mainly was about swapping an LCD.

Originally, SIO2SD used 16×2 LCD which is rather large for this project so Ajcek decided to go with a slightly smaller version. I also designed a 3D-printed cover/bracket for it and resoldered it to fit this project.

Next, I’ve done some fitting and attempted to find a good spot to install a small PCB with TACT switches to conveniently operate SIO2SD.

However, it turned out that the TACT switches spot landed on the back side as you will see in a minute, but first, pics of an already painted case. Yes, I forgot to take pics while I was working on it 🙁

I’ve added a 3D-printed panel to the switches.

Final pics

I am sorry I didn’t document everything properly hence the #short post, but here is the final result of the job.

Most importantly, Ajcek said he is happy with how the machine looks now 🙂
