The mouSTer – Modern mouse adapter for retro computers

The mouSTer is a device that allows you to connect any USB mouse (not just PS/2) to as many old computers as possible.

The project aims to be as universal as possible, meaning that over time, it will support as many retro computers as possible.

The user’s manual is available inside a mouSTer.ini file after connecting a FAT32-formatted USB thumb drive.

Firmware is in constant development. At the moment, the following retro platforms are fully supported:

Supported Platforms:

  • Commodore 64/128
  • Commodore 64 ULTIMATE https://www.commodore.net
  • MEGA65  https://mega65.org/
  • Commodore VIC-20
  • Atari ST/STe series
  • Atari Falcon
  • Atari 400/800/XE/XL
  • Atari 2600/5200
  • Amiga 500/600/1200 as well as Amiga 1000/2000/3000/4000
  • Amiga CD32 – Original PAD emulation fully supported
  • ZX Spectrum via Kempston Interface

mouSTer can emulate:

  • Atari mouse
  • Amiga mouse (including wheel support) <– new driver in the making
  • Joystick
  • Gamepad
  • Commodore C1351 mouse (GEOS mouse)
  • Trackball (experimental)
  • new, non-existing devices 🙂

Supported USB Devices:

  • ALL USB mice
    • literally, ALL
  • ALL USB Gamepads
    • literally ALL or almost ALL(Bluetooth dongles will not work)
  • ALL USB Joysticks
    • USB joysticks are not so popular, so mouSTer has not been tested with too many.

It also supports nearly all USB flash drives (config dump and upload). For obvious reasons, all those mouse devices with lots of LEDs and additional electronics might not work due to the poor current output of DB9 ports in old computers. Technically, mouSTer supports these devices, but there won’t be enough juice to power them.

Tested devices:

  • Wireless mice with USB RF dongles
  • Sony DS3 (wired)
  • Sony DS4 (wired)
  • Sony DS5 (wired)
  • Xbox360(wired+wireless dongle)

Future support is still a work in progress. We aim to support all retro PCs (DB9 socket) and Macintosh machines(ADB) through an add-on that supplies external power.
