… or did I start fixing by breaking?
Intro
It’s time for some bad apples 😀
In 2023 I covered my work on two Apple IIc, however, there was one more machine to be sorted out IIc Plus along with two 5.25 floppy drives and this is what will be covered in today’s post.
The plan for this machine was to install Mockingboard 4c+ and ROMxc+, but as I’ve described in a previous IIc post, I messed up and somehow swapped Mockingboards. The one for IIc Plus was already on the way to a client in one of IIc from the previous job. Since all three machines were going to the same client, I simply sent it so the client could swap the Mockingboards at his place. Therefore, the Mockingboard mounting will not be covered in this post.
The fail
Right at the beginning of this fix, I messed up horribly, resulting in additional work that had to be done later.

As it turned out, this was not a 220VAC PSU inside. Magic smoke time! YaY!

I’ve quickly moved on with disassembly to check what damage was inflicted.

Of course, the mains voltage electrolytic cap was blown inside the PSU. Fortunately, that was the only problem.

The job
After fixing the PSU and testing it properly I started the usual cleaning procedure. The keyboard was the first to go.

Next, I’ve installed the ROMXc+. It

The internal floppy drive needed some servicing too. Usual stuff, cleaning, and lubricating.

With the above sorted out, I reassembled the unit and started loading various programs to test if everything worked.
Additionally, I’ve used externally connected FloppyEMU from BMOW to load some games. An excellent device I must say.

The Apple IIc Plus was ready, but I also had to take care of two 5.25 external floppy drives.
Floppy drives
Both drives were in working order but required the usual stuff – cleaning, retr0brighting, lubricating, and some other minor touches. Nothing fancy.

Interestingly, these drives were once a US gov property.

After adding some fresh rubber feet, both drives were ready.
