Macintosh Powerbook 170

… or tunneling adventures

Double Mac, please …

Yup, this time I’ve managed to get two Macintosh Powerbook 170 units in pretty bad shape. I’ve got ’em off eBay in a non-working state. I’ve never owned a Mac with a Motorola CPU so I’ve bought them out o simple curiosity 🙂

As it turned out, both Macs were heavily damaged and I have to point out at the beginning that I’ve managed to fix only one unit by disassembling both and creating one unit out of the best parts, but let me first show you how it all looked after unpacking.


Nearly everything in both units was heavily corroded and most of the parts were broken with cracks everywhere.

Hard drive

There were two hard drives 40MB Conner and 80MB IBM. Both are 2.5″ SCSI type and obviously I’ve attempted to rescue them. The first one (Conner) required a bit of cleaning as most of the signal pins were covered with copper complex residue.

To my surprise, it started to work right away after cleaning.

The other unit – 80MB IBM drive – had more problems. It didn’t even turn on. However, after looking at it closely, I’ve found spots with missing components and while unpacking these puppies, I’ve found some loose parts.

R14 and Y3

I’ve then removed a PCB and cleaned all contacts, then soldered on an R14. However, Y3 quartz oscillator pins were missing 🙁

I’ve tried to replace it with a THT 24MHz quartz oscillator just to check if it will work but unfortunately, it didn’t.

I’ve decided that I’ll leave it because I wanted to replace both disks with SD2SCSI devices in the future anyway.

Cleaning and testing

I gave a good and warm ultrasonic cleaning to all PCBs. After that, I was able to connect parts on my bench to test which parts are working and which require fixing.

When I’ve supplied power to the setup it greeted me with CHIME and a mouse cursor! Yay! progress!

I’ve then hooked up one of the hard drives and at first, it looked like it is gonna boot… NOT

Further hacks required … 🙂

LCD disassembly and fixing attempt

I already knew that one of the LCDs is working but the other had some issues and didn’t fully light up.

Disassembly followed.

I’ve spotted weird and rusty corrosion on one of the pins. It is weird because it is actual rust – an Iron Oxide – which is quite unusual. Moreover! Only single pin was corroded!

My idea to repair it was to use a rotary tool to get rid of a plastic top above that pin to reveal more of it.

Most of the time, external pins are going a long way to an inside of the chip so getting a bit of external cover will not do much harm to a chip and it allows to solder a wire to it 🙂

Dull job but it kinda worked.

In the mean-time, I’ve checked if CCFLs are intact and not broken by closing ’em to a cheap plasma ball lamp.

If they were broken and not sealed tight then there would be no glow visible.

After all the above work … I still failed to make this LCD fully alive 🙁

It partially displays content but it is far away from perfect. My best guess is that problem lies in rubber contact pads.

I will have to get back to this someday. For now, I’ve shifted my focus to a working unit.

Case fixing

Most of the fixes here were about screw studs. The case itself was rather intact but nearly all studs were broken.

All of the metal parts had to be cleaned of all residue. In this case, the best solution was to use a 30% solution of Hydrochloric Acid.

A warm bath in an acid brought back a nice look to all metal screw studs.

Now, puzzle time! I wanted to use as many original pieces as possible.

Two-part epoxy glue served a good job. Not the best looking solution but at least solid.


The trackball was next on a “ToDo” list.

First of all, it didn’t work properly, and second, plastic studs were broken here too …

The electronic part was easy, one of the photoreceivers was simply bent backward which prevented proper readings.

After cleaning the whole thing it was ready to mount. I only had to fix mounting studs.

Epoxy to the rescue! 🙂

Assembly and minor fixes

Ok, time to assemble everything. I’ve replaced an RTC battery with a CR2025 along the way. Below some pics of the process.

System 7 installation

Ok, now I was ready to install System 7

I’ve first launched the machine to see if it actually works and it worked but LCD had some “dead pixels” – more on this later.

Since I didn’t have the original System 7 installation disk, I had to create one. I’ve used my extremely useful RetroPC described in one of the previous posts.

It has a floppy drive and Win98 which was nearly enough. I only needed to download and install this cool software by John Newbigin – RawWrite

After a while, I had a copy of the fresh installation floppy disk.

The Installation has begun.

After a while, I had a ready system but unfortunately, a hard disk died right after successful install 🙁

Looks like I will have to make some of these SCSI2SD boards soon.

Anyway, there is one more quite interesting thing that I would like to cover – weird LCD behavior.

It is called tunneling and is known to happen in several PowerBooks from that era. Some people wrote that it is caused by humidity, others that it is because of a poor glue layer.

By the way, I took the following pics a few weeks after assembly and to my surprise “dead pixels” vanished 🙂

Anyway, that’s it for now. Expect further mods and fixes of this machine in the future. Especially because I have another Macintosh Powerbook 170 to fix 🙂
